The Wallace Fountains: A Global Legacy
An animation exploring the history and symbolism of the Wallace Fountains. Created to coincide with the opening to the public of the renovated, historic Château de Bagatelle, Paris (one-time residence of Richard Wallace) on the 13th June 2024. The Wallace Fountains are iconic public drinking fountains found throughout Paris, France, known for their distinctive green cast-iron design. These fountains were a philanthropic gift from Sir Richard Wallace, an English philanthropist, in the late 19th century. Wallace funded their installation in 1872 to provide free, clean drinking water to the city's residents and visitors. The fountains are characterized by their elegant design, often featuring four caryatids symbolizing kindness, simplicity, charity, and sobriety. Today, the Wallace Fountains are not only functional public amenities but also cherished symbols of Parisian culture and history. They are also found in many countries outside of France and in many colours.
